Dad's favourite places- Not really sure that he had any in particular; he was however generally interested in any- a) Roman sites b) Castles c) Moors and mountains d) Gardens e) Bird sanctuaries. Of course when we were children, he was always prepared to take us to places we wanted to go; in my case it was often a steam railway. Indeed he even took myself and a school friend Nick on a tour of the Welsh lines over the Easter period in 1974- I was just young enough to qualify as a child and Nick was sufficiently close that we could get away with it. I think Karen was particularly put out as this was the first proper trip away in the newly acquired caravan and she missed out and instead had to help Mum redecorate the downstairs toilet! Whilst at Bradford on Avon there were regular trips to Great Chalfield, Lacock, Stourhead, Slimbridge, Westonbirt, Stowe. His favourite story was when joining a guided nature walk he gradually realised that the person leading it was probably no one other than his ex Headmaster of Chigwell School and dropped some bits into the conversation just to be sure. When admitting who is was, the retort was - you can't be John Woodbridge because you haven't got that ginger hair! In the earlier years at Stondon Massey his interest was primarily with his young grand children and visiting places with them. In latter years he wasn't keen to travel far from home at all, but did like his visits to Hanningfield Reservoir nature reserve and his last trip was to have a small picnic on a warm mid September afternoon on the shore of Connaught Water in Epping Forest.
